PLAYER FEEDBACK

From previous tournaments, with comment from the Tournament Director :-

We would like to thank those of you that have taken the opportunity of including feedback on your Entry Form. This is most helpful and hopefully, will enable us to improve the way we run the tournament for you and improve on what is already a high level of satisfaction. The following is our response to some of your feedback:-

"..Slow play is the most unpleasant thing of the week. Each year it gets a little worse. Tournament itself is very well organised. Thanks for the terrific job done..." Grant replies:- I agree with this feedback. 4.5 - 5 hour rounds are now becoming the norm, and that's a long time in the summer sun. Players please note and try and get a wriggle on...It's not the PGA tour!"

"..Excellent tournament again this year. I notice that some comments in the feedback ask for more even distribution of morning and afternoon starts. The best you can achieve is two groups having two am and three pm starts and two groups have three am and two pm starts. You can do this easily without alterting the course draw as I pointed out to you last year. I don't know why you persist with the one group having one am and 4 pm starts and three groups having three and two pm ..." Grant replies:- The availability of courses is at the discretion of each host club, and we all have competing daily commitments during Classic week and in fact right throughout the year. Three of the host clubs have the highest number of rounds played per week, anywhere in NZ, and have some of the largest membership numbers, so what we don't want to do, is get off side with our members by disrupting their playing privileges and re-scheduling other competitions for an entire week. If it was able to be done "easily", we would have done it!! As a matter of interest, it takes a full four days work to do the draws, and another weeks work to allocate players to groups and draws according to their preferences. If we did not take account of players preferences and simply did a random draw, it would be "easier" for us, but then you might all be somewhat disillusioned and decide to go elsewhere. Another fact which the casual observer may not be aware of is that a significant number of players prefer afternoon rounds e.g. Group 3 would be 75% players who requested afternoon rounds (including their travelling buddies)...

" If all groups play at the same time i.e. all morning or all afternoon, so as to have basically the same weather conditions. Past years we play windy or wet condition say morning round then rest have calmer conditions for the afternoon..." Grant replies:- The local weather in February can vary from course to course, particularly with thunderstorm activity, and it's unlikely that programming all rounds for the morning or afternoon would achieve consistent playing conditions across the field. The course draw is a compromise to suit both players and host clubs, and like all compromises, it ain't perfect, but it's the best we can do to cater for most contingencies.

I felt that on checking various winning player handicaps, had the handicaps rolled over, some would have been playing on handicaps as many as 3 shots to their advantage. I feel that handicaps should be played as they change in the natural course of cards received.." Grant replies:- Unfortunately, that is not an option for two reasons. The first is that there may not be a handicap rollover during tournament week (affecting all NZ players) and this has been the case in the past and is the case in 2009. The second issue is pre-printing of cards with handicaps is a major job for 450+ players and these are of necessity done prior to the commencement of the tournament. We are confident that with the need for all players to now provide evidence of 20 rounds played int he 12 months prior to the event, and the review process we undertake for high scores during the tournament, the results will be as fair as they can be.

Can we have vouchers for prizes as it used to be..?" Grant replies:- to be honest, the prizetable was orginally product, not vouchers and when vouchers were introduced a few years ago, they were not all that popular. The electronic gear we now provide as prizes acheives the best value for money when pruchasing prizes (how do you get a bulk purchase discount on a Farmers Voucher when its redeemed at the store?) and seems to be appreciated by most players. Host clubs will review this at our tournament de-brief.

"..I know doing the draws is very difficult but every year for 8 years I've played with someone 2 or 3 times - that is it might be say last year Jo Bloggs and I would have played with that person on the Monday and say Wednesday and sometimes a 3rd time.." Grant replies:- Up to 2006 this sort of feedback was not unusual, but my colleague Claire spent countless hours getting the draw right in 2007, to ensure that players were well "blended", and by all accounts she did a great job We checked out the draw for 2007 for this player and found that she had not been drawn to play with the same person more than once!

"..Grant, last year there was a small team of competitors in our Group wearing a fluroscent yellow golf shirt with "NIMROD" printed on the back.  A couple of them had fairly impressive (if not seedy) looking moustaches as well!  I personally enjoyed the look, and the entertainment they brought to our Group, but was wondering if you had any general comments on dress code?  I for one will be packing sunglasses in my bag in case I'm paired with those guys again - the fluro shirt was radioactive! Thanks.." Grant replies:- Hmmm! I must have blinked and missed those guys! Look, the Classic is meant to be a fun tournament as well, and we would not discourage team uniforms for those that get a kick out of that - provided the clothing complies with the dress code of host clubs. I'm not sure about the seedy moustaches though. Personally, I reckon they should be banned everywhere!!

"..Mens Field handicap should finish at 24 max like other open tournaments.." Grant replies:- This one has come up before and my answer appears below. In summary, this is a stableford tournament designed to appeal to a diverse range of players so why would we want to restrict this appeal? In reviewing the tournament notices for 20 other "open" stableford tournaments, we could only find one that required a max handicap, and that was 28, the rest were just open to players with an official handicap index, which for men is capped at 36.4.

"..I wonder if it would be possible to vary the daily prizes. It would be really helpful if people travelling together could have a tee time within say 30 minutes of each other.." Grant replies:- We can probably mix the prizes up a bit, but I think you're asking a bit much with the draws. We already have to take into account travel arrangements, home clubs and gender for 464 players. to then attempt to narrow tee times down for a group that already have been given preferential treatment is perhaps one bridge too far I think!

"..Would like morning and afternoon tee times.." Grant replies:- Unfortunately, it is impractical to give players an equal share of AM/PM times because of the commitments of the host clubs and the complexity of the daily draws. There was a thought that if we played all rounds in the morning, it would leave players the afternoon to enjoy the other activities available in the BOP, but that had as many opponents as it had proponents.

"..Prizes for women should be of the same size/value etc as prizes for men i.e. If the daily and major prizes for men are golf bags, clubs etc, so they should be for the Womens division too.." Grant replies:- The prize pool is shared proportionally between men and women, and while the main prizes are generally the same, the reason we only allocate 10 overall prizes per womens Grade compared with 20 per mens Grade is to ensure that the value of prizes is not watered down and worthwhile prizes are on offer.."

"..Seeded draws would be great, but mixed is okay.." Grant replies:- Seeded draws won't work because of the policy of mixing men/women, avoiding players from the same club playing together and also taking into account the needs of players sharing transport. As far as we are aware, very few stableford comps have seeded draws.

"..Would be great if sponsor packs were more visible e.g. Srixon umbrellas for all - If people knew up front they wouldn't bring anything else.." Grant replies:- We are happy to take input on what players prefer in a Player Pack. Just email us with your ideas but bear in mind that we are working to a budget.."

"Caddies. Do they take away the "endurance" factor? I played in a four where a wife caddied: She was most talkative - commented on everyone's shots and totally disrupted the "comrade" atmosphere of the four that had developed during previous games. She was unnecessary as her husband was perfectly fit" Grant Responds:- The issue of caddies hasn't come up before, so we could assume that at this stage, "noisy" caddies are the exception rather than the rule. I guess a "quiet word" in the players ear about golf etiquette might help, but then again, it might create more problems than it solves. At least the other players in the group got a break at the end of the round, unlike the husband!!!!!!

"Each player should get at least a couple of starts off the 1st tee during the week " - Grant responds:- Five days, 464 players, four groups and many of the players requesting the same group for travel etc - You'd be surpised how tough that mission is!

"Each group should have equal morning and afternoon draws " - Grant responds:- Five days, four groups and Monday and Friday set as PM and AM draws respectively to allow for travel (Monday) and Main Prizegiving (Friday) does not give any latitude for giving the four groups equal AM/PM draws. In doing the groups for 2007, Claire is making every effort to ensure that players that were in Group 3 in 2006, are in different groups for 2007. Sorry, but that's the best we can do.

"Suggest a more equitable spread of prizes between golf courses" - Grant responds:- Daily prizes are the same at all courses, the only exception being the special prizes from the Srixon sponsorship, which last year were presented to each group when they played Mt Maunganui. This will happen again in 2006, but will be reviewed after that.

"Would like to play with more different people, not friends from our own Club all the time" - Grant responds:- Every effort is made with the draw to ensure that you get to play with a wide variety of golfers. We will do our best for 2006.

"Alternatives to wine as prizes please" - Grant responds:- We accept that not everyone wants wine but it does seem to be popular. Will have a think about this though!

"Perhaps some thought could be given to having more interaction between the groups with possibily an extra social night at a venue large enough to accommodate everyone" - Grant responds:- That sounds like a good idea, but finding that venue has proven to be tricky in the past. Final prizegiving will include live music hopefully from the very popular Kokomo Band, and every effort will be made by Tauranga Golf Club to make the day a "Ripper".

"Continue to mix males and females together" - Grant responds:- Yes, this will continue, just as nature intended but not all players feel that way with a couple indicating that they would like gender segregation in the playing groups.

"Keep the rain away!" - Grant responds:- Hear, hear, but there's a lot of luck when it comes to Nature.

"Suggest that tournament shirts be more attractive and possibily include the NZ Logo (silver fern)" - Grant responds:- Finding a quality shirt with logo that we can retail for around $40 is a bit of a challenge, but we will look at something a bit different in cotton for 2006.

"Is it possible to require players to have handed in a minimum number of valid scorecards for handicapping in the preceding months? It's a great tournament, but I'd like to have a chance of winning a prize if I play well" - Grant responds:- As you all know, we are able to adjust the handicaps after the first round, and a few years ago, this was not unusual. Lately, the scoring has been within normal parameters, and those that play well and consistently well, generally end up with a prize. Consistency is the key, and you can bet it will be the players that play to their handicaps that finish in the top quarter of the leaderboard.

"Do you think maybe where a round is cancelled for one reason or another, a voucher could be handed out so that a game could be played at some later date?" - Grant responds:- To be perfectly honest, no. We still do the daily prizes by lucky draw, and I don't know of any other tournaments where you would receive a credit for not finishing a round. I will raise this with the other host clubs though.

"Set up so the entry fee can be paid electronically" - Grant responds:- Good idea, and we will include our bank account details on next years Entry Form. A Credit card payment section was considered for this year, along with a web based entry form, but there were security issues so we have held that off.

"Would prefer to play Te Puke on the Friday as we are staying in Rotorua" - Grant responds:- Drawing you into a group that plays Te Puke on the Friday is a bit tricky, but we'll see what we can do. Did you know it only takes 40 mins to travel the new highway from Tauranga - Rotorua via Pyes Pa Road? Come to the tournament prizegiving and go straight to Rotorua.

"Maximum handicap for Men should be 24" - Grant responds:- With a good number of the entries from higher handicappers, that condition would be a real negative for our tournament. Restricting the tournament to affiliated players and adjusting handicaps daily as required should take care of the "burglars". Don't forget that the tournament is handicap based, and it's the 400+ entries each year that have made it so successful. Reducing the max handicap limit from 36.4 to 24.0 would send out the wrong message I suspect.

"Would like to see anyone who scores over 42 points in the first round re-handicapped for Round 2" - Grant responds:- 42 points is not an unusual score in Club play, and it is probably unfair to immediately ping a player who returns a one off score like this and who could easily return a 32 the next round at another course. If they were to go out on Day 2 and score another 42 points, it would be a different matter, and it's probably at that stage that some serious examination of their scoring record would take place without delay, and any adjustment would be applied from the following round, with the host club and player being notified prior to Tee Off.

"Play all players travelling together as a four on the last day, speeds up getting to Prizegiving" - Grant responds:- Possibily an option, but bearing in mind that each course has a local prizegiving on the Friday, playing shared travellers as a four is unlikely to result in an early trip to the main prizegiving venue (Tauranga Golf Club).

"Can we please play with those travelling together during the week, one at a time?" - Grant responds:- This is starting to get a bit complicated when it comes to the daily draw, but hey, we'll do our best!

"I feel there should be a section for non-golfers i.e. 36+ or 36+ players play off 24. I played one year where a non-golfer came in with 45 points 1st day, 44 2nd day. It's pretty hard for a handicapped player to compete against these sorts of scores. to come in with 5 rounds at 36 points is playing reasonable golf but falls well short of what 36+ (handicappers) come in with" - Grant responds:- Hmmmmmm! so a "non golfer" is now a player who plays off a high handicap? As mentioned above, that could send out the wrong message to new players and we don't want that. I am confident that the handicap checking and adjustment process will weed out the - shall we say - aberrations in scoring. In a check of final scores from the 2004 Classic in Grade 3 (Mens Higher Handicappers) there were only two players over 30.0 handicap and they finsihed 90th and 96th respectively in a group of 97 players. The high handicap women players are similar. Have faith folks!

"Maybe last year when a number of players played at Western Bay in very difficult conditions (flood like), perhaps that day could have been cancelled to make it fair for them. The rest of us played in rain inthe morning but apparently it wasn't nearly as bad as at Western Bay. I'm sure it's difficult to know what to do because most people wouldn't want their day cancelled (just a thought thought)" - Grant responds:- Torrential rain on one course is the worst case scenario, and you're right, making a call about abandonment because of weather conditions is a tough one. My feeling is that thunderstorm activity is generally short duration by nature, and if there's any chance of a postponement until the course affected becomes playable, then that will be considered.
