Eves 5CC Newsletter - April 2012 - Tuesday, 8 May 2012

Firstly, thank you to all those who participated in the Eves 5CC this year and also for all the positive and negative comments we have received.

As the host club we decided, with the support of the other four clubs, to take the Eves 5 Course Classic to a new level by developing a new stand alone website which allowed all clubs to be involved in the processing of scores as well as having a leader-board showing at all clubs. This development also allowed the host club to have better control and processing of all the administration aspects required for the tournament.

The five clubs have had a de-brief meeting to discuss the 2012 tournament and the large number of positive comments along with the negative comments we received which highlighted a historical problem of handicapping and other issues.

The de-brief meeting agreed to retained the ‘handicap adjustment policy’ as it stands, however there will be a better review of handicaps prior to the commencement of the tournament. This review will include;

1. Checking handicap records of all those players who achieved a top 10 finish in each group this year.
2. Checking all players records to see if there have been any major changes to a player’s handicap prior to the tournament.
3. Bring in line overseas players handicaps, which are from a non-slope country, with the NZ slope system. However as an example, Australia is in the process of considering a type of slope system.

The clubs do have some concerns with the odd number of players who so call ‘farm’ their handicap for this event and feel that for most golfers it is impossible to score consistently high over five rounds on five different courses. We are hoping that with better checking that we are able to reduce the problem so that it is a level and fair playing field for all players in the tournament.

Playing Fours;
When Mt Maunganui hosted the event several years ago it was the view at that time there should not be any mixed gender playing fours. However there were a couple of comments that playing fours should be mixed and all clubs agree. The draw for next year will include mixed gender fours where possible. Another comment was the number of times players play together during the week, unfortunately the draw is carried out as soon as possible after the last handicap rollover which due to very strict time restraints for getting this information to the printer, it is physically impossible to check all players over the 20 draws for the week.

2013 Tournament;
The date of the 2013 Tournament will be on Monday 28th January to Friday 1st February. Online registration will be available from 1 August 2012. Players from the last two years will receive advice on when registrations will be open. Also 2013 will be the 21st Birthday for the Eves 5CC and it is being planned to have a pre-tournament dinner on the Sunday evening prior to the tournament to celebrate as well as giving those regular players to opportunity to catch up with old friends and for new players to meet new friends. The cost of the dinner is still to be finalised but will be an option at the time of entry.

All clubs and the sponsor would like to thank all those who supported the event this year and also those who have continued to support the Eves 5 Course Classic in the past. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2013.

Kind regards
Brian Jopson
